BLA! GET TO KNOW THE ARTISTS 2018

This year Burleigh Brewing will award $5,000 to the overall BLA winner to progress the future of an emerging local artist! That's 5k to create a showcase, visit Mona, invest in new supplies or even contribute to an art education!

Let's learn a little more about the Brewing Local Artists...

Michelle Carlton

About

I like to describe my work as Contemporary Interdisciplinary Art. I create 3D paintings using a unique combination of traditional painting techniques, design thinking, narrative, illustrative subject matter, construction methods and 3D floating layers to create very individual pieces that tell a story and visually “pop”.

Artistic Philosophy

My artistic philosophy is that art should be engaging and bring a sense of playfulness and joy to peoples lives. Through beautiful illustrations engagement occurs, then a narrative can take place. I invented this 3D style of artwork as I always want to push the boundaries of painting and bring it into the 3rd dimension. I thrive off being different, never wishing to follow in others footsteps but rather to be an innovator.

Technique used

I use a combination of designing, drawing, planning, painting, construction methods, metal work and wood work when creating each piece. My artworks are first designed and drawn. I then come up with a 3D layering system unique to each piece. I cut wood panels and Plexiglass (and other materials) to desired shapes. I hand paint every section of the illustration with a mixture of acrylic and oil painting techniques. I then construct a mounting system which allows the layers of my work to float above layers below. I add different features and materials in each piece to compliment the artwork and theme. You’ll often find recycled construction materials and metal in my work too.

Mike Van Dam

About

Mike is an award-winning and internationally recognized artist that has sculptures that have been placed all over the world and have attracted various prestigious artistic awards. Mike’s sculptures have been previously placed in central iconic locations such as Sydney Harbor, Hayman Island, Israel and Greece.

Artistic Philosophy

Mike is known to create meaningful and moving pieces.

Technique used

The material Mike uses for his Sculptures is 4mm and 6mm 316 marine grade stainless steel. Once the links are welded together, Mike’s sculptures become strong and durable, ideal for the coastal, commercial, public environment

If I won the $5000…

I would buy more material. My supplier is in Burleigh Heads, (Bridco) they give me a good price, but it is still an expensive material to create sculptures with.

Dave Newman

About

I’m a High School Art Teacher & Father (of terrors) who’d love more time to do (my) art. I’m working on it.

Artistic Philosophy

I try to blend my love of the natural world with a fascination with myth, speckled with contemporary stylistic influences.

Technique used

Ink, graphite & gouache on paper/wood.

If I won the $5000…

I’d spend the $5000 building a studio/shack space and upgrading my materials.

Jamie Kasdaglis

About

I have loved to draw and paint since I can remember. I started as a graphic artist back in 1986, and am probably best known for my work through the late 80’s for surfwear company Billabong.

Technique used

Acrylic on board.

If I won the $5000…

If there is any money gained from these paintings it will be put towards art materials to pursue my artistic passion.

Fiona Watson

About

The aesthetic of her work is informed by the nostalgia of the older coastal lifestyle and the holidays people enjoyed in those towns.  She documents, preserves and reflects upon these older homes and surf vehicles in her work and she finds the classic scenes comforting.  The fibro and blonde brick beach houses that dot the Gold Coast and surrounding towns in all their kitsch quirkiness and the retro nostalgia and memories attached to these often-humble dwellings and cars are an integral layer in the storytelling of earlier times.

Artistic Philosophy

The business name and the aesthetic of her work reflects her love of all things old, worn, nostalgic and sentimental and the memories and stories connected to them.

Technique used

Hand carved and printed, hand coloured linocut artworks, created in limited editions.

If I won the $5000…

As an artist who combines my love of linocut printmaking with a full-time teaching career, if I should be the recipient, the prize money would be spent on education and equipment.

The pursuit of my artistic passion would be supported by a planned marketing and promotions strategy, including professional photography of my work, and updated website and a streamlined online shop.  With my artworks reaching a wider audience and the ability to sell them more efficiently, I can grow my business.  My education in this aspect of my art business would be valuable. I also wish to update my printmaking equipment, which is currently the same as what is used by my students! Professional tools would allow me to create increasingly more detailed works, and I can explore my themes in more depth.

Dean Cogle

About

Identity, tradition and place provide scope relating to creative pursuits at the heart of culture. For Dean Cogle, these pursuits are drawn from influences with a common coastal thread. His depictions of Drive-by icons such as Motor Inns, Motels and the once ubiquitous Fibro Beach Shack fulfills a connection to South East Queensland, at first unwittingly recording for some, a nostalgic narrative. Exposure to Arts industries such as graphic design, photography, architecture and print production expanded Cogle’s creativity, developing a stronger grasp of composition. Pop-surrealism and alternative influences soon entered the mix.

Passionate about portraiture he is the founder of the Neumann Dust Temple Portrait Prize, now in its second year held at Dust Temple, Currumbin on the Gold Coast. Over the past two decades large scale projects have been highlights in his arts practice.

If I won the $5000

I imagine versions of this image applied on a larger scale, perhaps incorporated into a street-art piece. I would use the money to develop a piece based on the fluid undertone, where a collaboration could occur with additional imagery applied creating a broader narrative.

Nina Hanley

About

I am inspired by Surrealism, movies, vintage comic books and colour. I try to capture an alternative view of my surroundings that is occasionally uncomfortable and absurd with a touch of femininity.

Artistic Philosophy

My artistic philosophy is that art should be something that makes you feel. Whether it hits a raw nerve or makes you smile. It’s like playing your favourite song on repeat. Art is like that for me. When I love it, I can’t stop looking at it and that simple pleasure feels amazing.

Technique used

Digital photography

 I’d spend the $5000 by

Upgrading my digital Camera or put it towards a brand-new lens. What a treat!

Llewellyn Skye

About

Born in Gosford NSW, raised in Sydney, now living and working on the Gold Coast and known simply as Skye. Graduating from the National Art School with a BFA in Sculpture followed by a Diploma in Painting at Meadowbank TAFE, Skye now paints between her studio at the Dust Temple, Currumbin and at home in Palm Beach while raising her three young kids.

Influenced by the French Impressionists and Contemporary Art, Skye’s work is often playful, coloured and layered. This body of work represents Community, who we are on the Gold Coast and the notions behind what makes us come together as one.

Artistic Philosophy

Art is an extension of the soul.

Techniques used

I paint with both Acrylic and Oil paints.

If I won the $5000…

This prize money would help in so many ways. It would allow me to pay for materials, supplies and studio rent so I could work on having my first solo show on the Gold Coast since 2008. Alternatively, it could go towards travelling the USA to study with two leading contemporary painters Mark Daniel Nelson and Jennifer Polchinski. I’m currently studying online with Mark Daniel Nelson, it would be a dream come true to study with him in person to see how he applies paint, the techniques he uses and to immerse myself in the American Art scene.  Jennifer Pochinski is also an idol of mine, I have asked her to teach me online, but she only teaches face to face workshops – I would have to go to America to be able to learn from her at all. The prize money would give me the chance to learn from two leading international Artists, connect with the American Art scene and Art market and further my skills in a way that I cannot do here in my studio.

Toren Vansleve

About

Toren Vansleve is a digital illustrator, graphic designer and mixed media artist. With a background in graphic design, Toren feels most at home illustrating in a digital format before compiling her work into some sort of a 3D tactile form. She enjoys using illustration as a form of creative release from the Corporate work she does day to day as a designer.

Artistic Philosophy

Fake it ‘til you make it

Technique used

Mixed media Relief

If I won the $5000…

Travelling to London, Paris or Berlin to research and meet local street artists. I’m interested in learning how to do large scale murals and bringing different techniques to my design style. These cities also have a large fine art scene, so I hope to get inspiration from both types of art and blend them to create my own fusion.

Joy French

About

Joy French is an Australian artist.  Inspired by the poetry of daily life, the work of Joy French portrays the poignant and the personal with a stirring alacrity. Stunning in their detail, these mesmerising portraits are character driven more than anything else. With her training and experience as a sculptor, the artist can create alluring portrayals of people that are thrillingly three-dimensional and breathtakingly and true to life. Fascinated by the people she meets every day, French imbues her portraits with electric colours and expressively abstract flourishes. Vivacious and animated, they are dazzlingly true to reality in appearance and feeling. In these works, French touches on the essence of humanity in all its forms.

Artistic Philosophy

Art offers us a way of conceptualising our lives as meaningful if we consider ourselves as the artist who creates our own life’s meaning by taking into consideration both reason and emotion.

Our emotions are the motivating power behind our ideas. we take responsibility for our choices and we act – we create – and we alone bear the full responsibility for the choices we have made. In this way, we create a unique and subjectively beautiful life.

Technique used

Acrylics

I’d spend the $5000 by…

Buying more art supplies , doing a exhibit.  Doing up my art studio at home so that people can view my works from my home gallery collection. The 5 thousand would gonack into my art works and gallery space .

Jeska Valk

About

Inspired by the beauty of nature and its inter- relationship with the human world, Jeska’s unique works focus on environmental issues and human culture.  Currently working in oils, Jeska’s intricate, exquisitely detailed paintings draw you in. She manages to provide an intimate and at times poignant glimpse into her subjects.

Artistic Philosophy

Art creates a vital platform to tell a story with an emotive response.  My philosophy is to find truth and honour my subjects when painting their portrait.

Technique used

Oil on linen

If I won the $5000…

A $5000 prize would contribute greatly towards my growing art career.  I intend to continue painting woman of strength, sharing their stories through visual art.
